Thanks, Jo! Really looking forward to next weeks topic. I’ve been struggling with how to keep my newsletter clean but add visuals to identify it as it’s own.
Question: My email avatar -- you know, the little circle that show up in providers like gmail -- is the blank, generic gmail default when I send emails from Substack. But, when I send normal emails, the avatar I set appears. What's going on?
Hi Matt, thanks for being here! This sounds a lot like technical troubleshooting , in which us substackers don't have a lot of knowledge. My guess is that gmail doesn't recognize publication profile pictures. Yet?
When you say "normal emails", do you mean with your own email or substack email (like mattzamudio@substack.com)?
Ah, okay, I see. So Substack emails come from a unique email (mattzamudio@substack.com). How do we set a profile image/avatar for these emails? Generally, this would be done in the email provider (Gmail for a @gmai.com address), but I don't see any place to do this in Substack.
Is it supposed to be the publication logo? When I receive my own newsletters, the avatar is just the blank/default avatar for gmail, my provider.
In fact, I just looked at the avatars of the other Substack publications I receive in my email. All default/blank. Must be a technical constraint! Maybe something the visual substack team could take up with eng? I wonder if this is a quick fix or not.
Hey, I tested the other way around. My gmail account definitely has a profile picture. But if I send an email from there to my custom domain zoho mail account, it doesn't read that and just shows me default JP letters (for Jo Petroni). I guess it's dependent on the email provider's compatibility.
Right. And nothing from @gmail.com email shows a profile avatar either, when you receive it in another email client (like Apple or Proton mail or Zohomail)

Does that make sense Matt?
Sort of. Not really. Seems like nothing from an @substack.com email shows a profile avatar.
