Hello fellow Substackers,

On Wednesday we met and had a lovely chat (I thought) giving honest feedback on Substack publications first impressions. Teeth where pearly white!

What is My Visual Substack

By Substackers, for Substackers.

This is for all substack writers to meet, chat about the looks of their publication, have fun and grow together! Giving and receiving honest feedback from peers, thinking of your publication in new ways, making connections... Every two weeks on a Wednesday.

Yes, we do breakout rooms:)

Check out the next meeting date:

My Next Visual - 14th of September

02:50 - Welcome to Kathleen

A newcomer to My Visual and to Substack in general: Let’s welcome Kathleen, who writes Oh My Heart. Kathleen migrated her list onto Substack a couple fo months ago and she told us a bit about her experience with Instagram and being hew to Substack.

We discussed questions that some of you had about the way your posts look as they leave their Substack homes and end up in the real world of people’s inboxes. Gmail, Proton, Apple, email clients are all of different flavors, and not all of them speak the same language as us or as our posts.

08:05 - Avivah’s technical question (still open for answers!)

Avivah - who writes Elderberries - had an issue with the way images are being scaled down (or not) in email format. The problem is ongoing, so if anyone of you know how to help her, jump in. Namely, do you know why her images uploaded via the “Search for an image” feature in Substack editor, are not being rendered in emails at the size she set up for them? (She is scaling them down a lot, but they end up full width…)

The way they look

21:10 - Jack’s Old School white space trick

Jack from Vegan Weekly showed us how he works with white space in his posts and told us a trick he uses to bypass the fact that emails eat up your white spaces and separation lines sometimes.

26:00 - First Impression Exercise

You have to see it to believe it:)

Extra: Congrats to Kiki for hitting Publish! Kiki is writing You’re beautiful here on Substack and she started out her first post the other week, with an audio option!

Books are dead. They said it over and over again. Books are dead. No one will read they said. It hurt me to hear it. They saw the future. They knew what was what. And more than just knowing they didn’t care. They rubbed it in. Their line of thinking once books are gone, the need to tell stories and the reason to read them will be next. Books dead. All…
